An experienced blade smith noticed a niche in the culinary market for knives. Quentin Middleton built his blade smith hobby into a business Middleton Made Knives. Middleton’s passion for knives and artistic creativity enables him to make Chef quality knives in his backyard 12x16 shop for one on one clients.

Suddenly, internet cuisine piqued his marketing manager, and friends curiosity. He decided to spread the word on Facebook. He created a Facebook Fan Page for Middleton’s knives inviting 700 people. Within 48 hours 400 people responded and became fans. Predominately professional and home chefs will wait six to eight weeks and pay $300-$400 dollars for his custom made knives. Selling out of Middleton Made Knives is commonplace for Whisk, a small shop in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, NY. Managers at Whisk sell the knives quicker than Middleton can make them.

Middleton Made Knives

After taking a quick look at the header HTML the Chief Information Officer will be busy. He’s a happy, rhythmic and hearty CIO. Plus he has Google’s API, CSS, and Jquery built into the header. Google’s API lives on the AJAX platform and will be digesting information from the site and storing it on Google’s servers. Along with the data from social media this knowledge will be vital as MMK revenue will increase exponentially, along with competition. Meeting the orders and maintaining the quality of MMK products will require precise examination of the information available from digital sources. Paired with the human capital MMK possesses, it would be difficult to put too much sugar in the forecasts and not enough butter in the manufacturing.

Middleton’s online strategy is efficient and effective. Their online presence takes advantage of social media through Facebook and Twitter. MMK’s website is clean, visually appealing, easy to use, and the shopping cart is sufficient. Middleton identified his market, professional and home chef’s that desire American handmade knives. Using data generated from social media analytics MMK will be blessed with the ability to further customize the client’s online experience from demographical data. Statistical information will be vital to MMK’s expansion. Extraction, and analyses of data gathered from social media, will be paramount in the requirements modeling function, and process engineering activities. Many small businesses find ERP, CRM, SCM, and HRM systems costly and intimidating. Knowing what the data means is the CIO’s Dessert. So what are you saying Mr. Williams? Glad you asked! I'm referring to the seamless connection of modern or digital marketing and information technology. Marketeers have gathered a plethora of data. From telemarketing to direct mail this old school form of marketing is relevant and has evolved to extend beyond the marketing mix to the information technology plan.

Effective competition for small business means an formula that includes the web, smartphones, social media, along with the old school marketing techniques. The digital era of marketing incorporates scripts and programming that do the heavy lifting as it relates to quantification of small business marketing efforts. Direct customer interaction is the core of social networking. New channels, better quantification, and improved segmentation are also quality points created by social networking.

With the increase in data marketers want higher quality analysis and accurate measurability. Usually big corporations take on big vendors like SAS, Teradata, Salesforce, and Market2Lead. Small Businesses are left in the backdrop.
Im your third-party market-it developer. That said:

1. Create a Budget
2. Target and Segment
3. Develop Content Components
4. Analyze Internet Impact
5. Avoid Overdata
6. Avoid Broad Based Campaigns
7. Integrate Across Channels

Transitioning to digital marketing is a must for small organizations to remain viable. Integrating digital and old school marketing techniques is a recipe full of flavor. Improved targeting, measurable outcomes, and efficient campaign results can ease the anxiety of small business start-ups and owners. Your business will grow!

Gotta Eat

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 245px; height: 213px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-yxx_evWhk6U/TZ-0HNoBfcI/AAAAAAAAAN0/nughsur6H2w/s320/theW.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5593387298227060162" />

Thanks for checking us out. The decision to make or buy is always important. Therefore we have created another short list detailing costs associated with building your own desktops versus buying desktops.

Clearly building your own desktop machine makes customization easier. However companies like Dell facilitate customization of major components.
Well, let’s compare and contrast to see what we come up with. The machine we will be looking at will be built for general computing and small business applications.

We use Microcenter and Newegg for parts.

Thermaltake V3 Black Edition ATX Mid Tower Case
SKU: 497818
Buy new: $44.99 $37.99
after rebate savings: $27.99
Pioneer 22x Internal Dual/Double Layer PATA DVD/CD Writer with LabelFlash - Black
SKU: 261297
1 new in stock: $39.99

Biostar A770E3 AM3 AMD 770 ATX Motherboard
SKU: 102772
6 new in stock: $59.99 $54.99
after rebate savings: $44.99

Intel Celeron E3400 2.6GHz Socket 775 Boxed Dual Core Processor
SKU: 110098
10 new in stock: $49.99 $39.99

Western Digital Caviar Green 2TB SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive WDBAAY0020HNC
SKU: 994350
10+ new in stock: $119.99 $89.99

Corsair CMX4GX3M1A1333C 4GB DDR3-1333 (PC3-10666) CL9 Desktop Memory Module
SKU: 897579
10+ new in stock: $69.99 $52.99
after rebate savings: $42.99

PNY VCG62512SAPB GeForce 6200 512MB DDR2 AGP Graphics Card
SKU: 867176
4 new in stock: $64.99 $49.99

SIIG SoundWave 7.1 PCI Sound Card
SKU: 914549
2 new in stock: $29.99
after rebate savings: $24.99

Gear Head Wireless Keyboard, Optical Mouse & Receiver
SKU: 335273
10+ new in stock: $24.99
I-INC IP191ABB 18.5" Widescreen LCD Monitor
SKU: 283481
10+ new in stock: $129.99 $89.99

500 before taxes!!!

DELL’S comparable computer is normally 720.00 on sale at 399.00 before taxes
48 hour sale! Okay hurry up and get it!!!
Reliable, expandable solution for small business??? I’m not so sure about the cost…
Starting Price $720.00
Total Savings $321.00
Dell Price $399.00

The Verdict

Based on this simple comparison and contrast I have determined that it is less expensive for small businesses to make their own desktops. No doubt, Dell makes a quality product. When compared to Apple and Lenovo (IBM) Dell is the most cost efficient. That’s why we chose Dell.

They offer a one year warranty for their machines. We will get between one and three years warranty on each of our computer components. Our hard drive will be one terabyte much larger than the dell hard drive. Both processors are dual core; however we have better random access memory on our machine. The remaining components are very similar in form factor and performance. Keep in mind the Dell machine t time is on sale until 4/9/2011. At that time the price will return to $720.00. Furthermore Dell’s customized machines get expensive quickly. You can easy top $1000.00 for desktop by adding common upgrades.

Now we have no excuses. We will make our own machines.

Compete 2011

Get your IT priorities together dude!
Elevate your game and get a chance to rub elbows with the big boys. IT is officially a necessary business unit worthy of a bigger budget, and a seat at the table of company executives. The importance of a relevant dedicated information technology unit is usually understated especially in the world of small business. That said, we have ten relevant issues your business may face that require technological savvy.

10. Optimization of hardware and software integration. Business processes should be focused to add value to the product or service being offered by your small business.

9. Draw from your businesses unique strengths and expand your company offerings globally. This means using the internet to level the playing field.

8. Keep your company ahead of the curve. Use customer relationship management tools to anticipate your customer’s needs and behaviors. IT accelerates this process.

7. Leveraging cloud resources is vital to your businesses success. Your IT guys live in the cloud. That is if you have an “IT Guy”.

6. Customer Relationship Management will also be a priority this year as CRM will power product and services design. Customers will demand participation in the process from end to end.

5. Social media tools will become indispensable. Simply put if you are not using social media you should just kill your business now.
4. Go digital. Keep back-ups of all data and documents. Your Information Technology Officer can insure who gets what data and insure deliverables are in the appropriate format.

3. Customers are accessing data via smartphone. Have a mobile/cellular strategy and secure or standardize it.

2. Make sure your budget for technology implementation is comparable or better than your competition. If not it can kill your business or career.

1. Use technology to quantify your data. What type of analytics will you and your organization be using measure and improve technology implementation.

I know… You’re making a three-million a year! You started with five-hundred in the bank, and you don’t need (blah, blah, and blah) to make money. The fact of the matter is that Im thinking expansion, wealth, and value. That’s what efficient, effective IT implementation does. Building a website adds value to your products and services, using facebook and other social media expands your customer base, and attaching an ecommerce unit to your business creates wealth. In 2011 to you want to make money, or build wealth?

regards
WEBSOLOGIST

To Tweet or not to Tweet???

The most popular LinkedIn, Twitter, Facebook, and Youtube are growing at exponential rates. Apprehension to these semantic Web 2.0, platforms is understandable as many people and business are slow to adapt to change.
I can appreciate social media because I live in the Matrix or the world of computer geekiness. I understand the platform, how to use it, and protecting privacy. Those of you that don’t understand should consider my company as an advisor to leveraging social media to benefit your business.

The world of social media is no anomaly. This is America and it is no surprise that these platforms proudly claim America as their home country. Social media is free speech and expression online just to keep it simple. Your customers’ competition and almost everybody between are perusing the virtual world of social media. An amalgamation of dynamic communities are being developed using social media. The connectedness is vital to consumers and producers, buyers and sellers, entertainers and fans. You know the type of relationship.

Being or hiring a saavy social networker has its upside. Businesses are connected to their customers in an informal way. It is the management of that relationship developed on social media that promotes your personal brand or business effectively. Consumers are voicing their opinions’ Businesses are communicating their message as well. For personal users cloud resources can be used for storage and collaboration on small projects.

Taking advantage of cloud resources involves management of corporate company information and knowledge. Managing valuable company information brings its own set of security issues. Not so much for the personal user. That said; let's get to the fun stuff being done in the Cloud.

Companies like Google, Saleforce, GoToMeeting and Amazon have used virtualization and datacenters built on server farms to deliver business applications to end users or clients. Facebook, and Twitter also use cloud resources to deliver all sorts of add on applications. I think it's safe to say facebooking and tweeting are very much enjoyable. Then the question becomes how can individuals and companies leverage cloud resources while mimicking the atmosphere of Facebook and twitter to increase productivity.

Maximizing the utilization of cloud computing resources just makes sense. In the age of smart phones, inexpensive digital storage, and smaller more powerful processors individuals and corporations can be connected perpetually. These connections are meaningful and serve to make life a bit simpler in terms of technology. If you have a gmail, youtube, amazon, or yahoo account you are using cloud resources already.

You name it; we can do it in the Cloud!

Vista to Seven....HOLD.....Sorry to not stimulate the Economy

According to Microsoft will be offering free upgrades from Vista to Windows 7. Unfortunately, the offer doesn't start until June 26. The lesson? If you planned to buy a new computer this month, don't. Wait for Windows 7.

To some extent, this new upgrade program shouldn't be a surprise; Microsoft offered free or low-cost upgrade coupons for Vista when it came out in 2007. In retrospect, the only thing worse than a Vista upgrade coupon was twoVista upgrade coupons. That's especially true for those poor saps who bought Vista Capable computers, only to find they couldn't handle Vista.

What Microsoft hasn't yet announced is the make-good program for Vista users that I wished a few weeks ago. A generous discount for Vista users, especially the early adopters who suffered through its birthing pains in early 2007, would be a great thank-you gift. Microsoft might lose a bit of money from upgraders, but they can consider it a PR cost of putting Vista behind them.

A program like the one Microsoft announced is aimed at preventing a sales freezeup that could occur now that users know Windows 7 is coming in late October. That could wipe out the back-to-school sales season, for example. Given the choice between a Vista computer that I can upgrade to Windows 7 and one with Windows 7 preinstalled, though, the best way to ensure compatibility is to wait.

http://www.informationweek.com

Social Networking Enterprise

The social networking craze that has swept the not only the young but established businesses of America has IT Infrastructure Architects managing blogs, social networking and the like.

This is where the Enterprise 2.0 Conference June 22-25 in Boston, comes in. Broadly speaking, the conference is a vehicle designed to make sense out of the social networking landscape made up of blogs, wikis, customer e-mails, web sites, and forums as well as cloud computing, that is increasingly critical to how business is conducted.

Steve Wylie, general manager of the conference, believes U.S. business is ripe for business-oriented social networking -- provided enterprises can understand it and its rapidly-changing dynamics.

"At Enterprise 2.0 we're exploring new technologies and how they're being put to work," said Wylie in an interview. "Everybody is a social media expert these days. But we're going to look at social media and distill it."

Wylie attributes the record high number of expected attendees -- 1,500 have pre-registered -- largely to their interest in finding and developing cost-efficient techniques and programs during trying economic times.

Noting that at an earlier Enterprise 2.0 event participants were still trying to define social networking, Wylie said many participants are now starting to implement their own social networking-based strategies.

They can learn from others, such as Lockheed Martin, which has initiated leading edge social networking. Harvard Business School professor Andrew McAfee will moderate a panel on "Applying the Social Dimension to the Lockheed Martin Mission." Participants will feature Lockheed's Shawn Dahlen, senior media program manager and Christopher Keohane, social media program product manager at Lockheed

Who said Social Networking couldn’t increase critical success factors. PC

The age old debate which is better Mac OS X or Windows OS.

The Mac Operating System X:

Macintosh’s Operating System has been improved. From the system utility “Finder” which locates and opens files folders and programs to installation of the operating system, the Mac OS has been streamlined and improved.

For example, multiple core processors and 64 bit support produces an OS that is even more aggressive when Snow Leopard is activated or installed. Leopard is the OS patch for Apple’s OS X. Much like Microsoft’s Seven is the OS patch for Vista.

Pro: Apple comes with useful pre-installed software.
Iphone, Ipod and family of compatible products.
Con: Price points, do it yourself hardware support. (tutorials are more available).

My opinion:

I love Macs for their pre-installed software. From a web design perspective Apple is incredible. Designing and Video Editing on Mac OS X Leopard is exhilarating.

Windows Vista Operating System:

Microsoft’s second to last OS has also been improved. From the interface to security and search features. The upgrade patch Windows Seven much like Leopard to OS X is the upgrade patch. Seven is Vista on steroids.

For instance, Seven also utilizes 64 bit support and dual core processing. (The processor is the frontal lobe of your machine.) Hardware support ventures into emerging touch screen technologies.

Pro: Price points, selection of hardware producers. Larger Market Share.
Con: Standards and compatibility issues. Additional software costs.

My opinion: I love PC’s for their programming conductivity. An amalgamation of utilities exists for web programming in a windows environment.

Both OS have their position in the world of computing. I’m proficient using both Apple and Windows to develop various projects. I also own both types of machines.

So keep debating……

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://websology.blogspot.com/2009/06/mac-vs-pc.html' title='MAC VS. Seven is believed by many to be the fully restored Vista. In other words, Seven will be Vista without all of the bugs and incompatibility issues. Naturally, programmers have written in more bells and whistles. For example, touch screen interface, slider for user account control, and upward compatibility from Vista to Seven without hardware upgrades.

Seven’s taskbars are bigger with previews the icons are larger and easier to use. Rollovers give fullscreen previews thereby increasing visual appeal and user friendliness. One of Vista’s strong suits. Users can pin frequently used programs and documents to the taskbar. Drag and drop is also functional in the taskbar.

Speed has been made a top priority. Booting, shutting down, and returning from standby have been streamlined and require fewer steps. User Account Control has been bundled into the Action Center and gives the user quick access to Seven’s back end Operating System allowing easy recovery from errors, disk management, and more.

Audio visual and entertainment have seen seamlessly integrated into Seven. Support for Digital Television and Windows Media Center has been built into certain versions of Seven. Accessing, storing, and enjoying digital media has never been so simple. Seven even manages a TV Guide and a new component called Turbo Scroll.

Comparing Vista to Seven is like comparing the good child to the bad child. Vista always acts up with its temper tantrums and incompatibility issues. Vista hardly ever cleans up while hogging memory and hardware resources. Vista is so selfish. On the other hand, Seven makes friends and shares resources while doing so. Seven is also prettier, and much faster. Building upon its older sibling’s successes as a handsome interface; Agility and physical fitness make Seven the hare, while Vista remains a tortoise.

RECORD KEEPING

Record Keeping is vital to establishing and maintaining an online presence. Leveraging technology to grow your business involves playing an active role in learning some of the technical jargon as well as knowing small things about technical advancements you desire to make.

Irritation is an understatement when describing several clients and freelance projects that involve updating and/or correcting a previous person’s work. Knowing things about your Operating Systems, Wireless Connectivity, Web Hosting, Web Security, and Networking will speed up your development process. Hourly compensation for services can easily become a motivator. Keeping notes about aforementioned items as they relate to your business is always a good idea.

For example, I have had clients with twenty thousand dollar projects completed and they have no idea where their Web Server lives or how to access it. Many clients have no idea of password information, or notes kept by developers. Translation: Longer time to delivery and higher costs.

When you are ready to expand your business develop notes and hardcopy ideas that facilitate the development process. I appreciate actively engaged clients. As a consultant/developer I would like to meet your budget.

STAY MOTIVATED & PRAY

Be leery but encourage (pray for them) those friends and associates who always have bad news and no joy. Presently it seems as if many people are going through really tough struggles. Whether financial, physical, or otherwise it is my belief that a close relationship with God is the remedy. “The joy of the lord is my strength”. That’s what the word says.

An associate of ours recently discussed her housing situation with us proclaiming she was about to lose her house and “her husband is not and will not work”. At this point we told her to talk to a lawyer and keep up with what the Obama Administration is doing with foreclosures. This was about six months ago. Our background in real estate allowed my wife to them into her home in 2005. Solid property, solid mortgage it was a good deal. At that point they were a dual income household with a terminally ill son. They wanted the house.

Since then things have gotten challenging for everybody. It is my theory that this financial crisis will separate the true from the fake, and the weak from the strong. She grew up in a Pentecostal church. However the enemy has her turning to the bottle instead of her Word. Wondering, why she is here at 12:00 am Tuesday night, finals start tomorrow, the kids have to be in school, my wife has to be at work, plus I have three clients in process; I went into priest mode.

Discussion began about their prayer life and how my wife and I pray. Several times we have shared the intimacies of our prayer life with them. Obviously to no avail, since she is here with a fourteen day notice from the magistrate. We went over some of her last options; Going to the sheriff sale, Bankruptcy, and the length of time taken to foreclose. Keeping her home is fueled by her son graduating next year.

Staying in the word, standing on God’s promises, and remaining prayerful has never been more important. I’m not claiming to be the biggest church boy. However, I am claiming to be extremely spiritual and knowledgeable about the power of agreement, and words. I always say put yourself in a position to be blessed. They are in a recession, we are in a progression. Be blessed, be a blessing to your family, friends, and associates. We will be fine watch you will see. “All things work together for the good of those who love Christ”.

SPEAK LIFE
CLAIM VICTORY
MOVE IN IT!!!

REQUIREMENTS MODELING.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 80px; height: 20px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_JgfHgRpmgGo/SfdpR8zC-fI/AAAAAAAAAKY/tTL4OdtwCdY/s320/websologist.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5329844441115195890" />
How does one know what the client needs? Listening to what the client says is first and foremost. Business Plans are important for this reason. Recommending a complete business plan for clients who might not have one is imperative. Many times an entrepreneurial perspective may be necessary to extract relevant data from plans, proposals, conversations etc. Beginning a successful project starts with planning.

First Questions I ask my clients.

1. Do you have a business plan?
2. What kind of business are you in?
3. Who is your target market or audience?
4. Where do you see your business next year?
5. How do you want to leverage technology to increase your business?

Once the answers to these questions are clear i can begin to map out how, and in what ways we can increase revenue, company image, and market share. This implementation could involve a mass email marketing campaign or a poll by text message. Knowing the requirements is an essential part of controlling complexity, risk, project scope and in un-ambiguously defining the goals and criteria for a successful software or business project. From business plans you can model complex requirements and provide full traceability from each requirement right through to the final deliverables and system behavior. Develop your business plans and control project management. Generating a solid plan is crucial without it you plan to fail.

websologist

Updates to the 2nd Quarter Websology

I will be updating the website second week of May.
